10 Signs You Need to Call an Electrician

Your electrical system is one of the most important — and potentially dangerous — parts of your home or business. Faulty wiring, outdated fuse boxes, and overloaded circuits can all lead to serious safety risks, including electric shocks or fires. Many electrical issues start small, but ignoring them can quickly turn a minor problem into an expensive or dangerous situation. That’s why knowing the warning signs is so important.

Here are 10 common signs that it’s time to call a qualified electrician. Spotting these early could protect your property, your family, or your staff — and save you money in the long run.

1. Flickering or Dimming Lights

It might seem minor, but lights that constantly flicker or dim can point to loose wiring, a failing connection, or circuits struggling to cope with demand.

If you notice this happening throughout the property — especially when appliances are in use — it’s a sign your electrical system needs attention.

2. Burning Smell Near Sockets or Switches

A burning or unusual smell coming from outlets, switches, or your fuse box is a major red flag. It often indicates overheating wires, a fault behind the walls, or even the early stages of an electrical fire.

If you smell burning plastic or something similar, switch off the power and call an electrician immediately.

3. Buzzing or Crackling Sounds

Electric systems should be silent. If you hear buzzing, crackling, or hissing noises coming from your sockets, switches, or light fittings, it usually means there’s a loose connection or damaged wiring somewhere in the system. Left unchecked, this can lead to more serious faults or fire hazards.

4. Tripping Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers are designed to cut the power when there’s a fault, but if yours keep tripping, it’s a sign of an underlying issue.

Frequent trips could mean overloaded circuits, faulty appliances, or wiring problems. An electrician can diagnose the cause and recommend safe, lasting solutions.

5. Scorch Marks or Discoloured Outlets

If you see black marks, heat damage, or discolouration around sockets, light switches, or the fuse box, it likely means wires are overheating behind the surface. This is often caused by arcing or loose connections and needs urgent repairs to avoid electrical fires.

6. Electrical Shocks

Getting a small shock from a socket or switch is never normal — it indicates a fault. This could be due to frayed wiring, poor insulation, or faulty equipment.

Even minor shocks are a serious safety concern and should be investigated straight away by a professional.

7. Faulty or Dead Outlets

When plugs or appliances stop working in certain sockets, it could be more than just a faulty outlet. It might signal deeper wiring problems, overloaded circuits, or connections that have worn out over time.

If outlets frequently stop working, have them checked.

8. Aged or Outdated Fuse Box

Old fuse boxes without modern safety features like RCD protection put your property at risk.

Older units also rely on rewirable fuses instead of circuit breakers, which offer much slower response times in the event of a fault. Upgrading to a new consumer unit dramatically improves safety and reliability.

9. Overloaded Extension Leads

If your home or business relies heavily on extension cords and multi-way adapters, it’s often a sign your electrical system lacks enough sockets. Overloading these leads increases the risk of overheating and electrical faults. An electrician can install extra outlets to meet demand safely.

10. Your Property is Over 25 Years Old

Electrical standards have changed significantly in the last few decades. If your property hasn’t had an electrical inspection or upgrade in over 25 years, chances are the system is outdated or unsafe.

A professional EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) will reveal if any work is needed to bring it up to standard.
